This presentation will discuss the theory and practice of treating bacterial dermatitis, otitis externa and gingivitis in companion, equine and farm animals, using probiotics to manipulate the local microenvironment and biome in favour of the host.
Peer-reviewed articles, case studies and clinical experiences will be presented.
These principles will be extended to the use of probiotic cleaning products to manage pathogenic colonization of work surfaces, as a method of addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance caused by the overuse of bactericidal chemical cleaners.
Questions will be welcome.
Learning objectives:
• Understanding the pathogenesis of AMR
• Use of probiotics to address pathogenic infections and rebalance the local biomes in which resistant pathogens predominate
• Practical use of probiotics for superficial bacterial infections in companion, equine and farm animals
• Practical use of probiotic surface cleaners
