Multidrug-resistant bacteria are at the forefront of concern in human medicine and are an emerging risk to consider when treating veterinary species. This session will describe the major pathogens that are of current or future concern in veterinary medicine in the UK. It will discuss how decisions made in practice can influence the selection of antimicrobial resistance in the colonising microflora of the patient. Overall, this session will aid in the duty of veterinarians to protect both animals and humans to mitigate the selection and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria through practical guidance on antimicrobial stewardship and infection control in clinical practice.
- -Understand the major multidrug-resistant bacteria of concern in veterinary medicine
- -Recognise the clinical scenarios in which risk is heightened for detection of these bacteria
- -Understand how antimicrobial stewardship and infection control can assist in minimising the selection and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria in clinical practice
