Take a deep breath: Why aspiration events don't always = aspiration pneumonia

This lecture covers the pathophysiology of aspiration, and the evidence base for treatment of dogs that develop aspiration pneumonia. We will discuss the difference between aspiration pneumonitis and aspiration pneumonia, and consider recent guidelines and evidence bases regarding the use of antimicrobials in such cases.

Learning objectives:
To recognise the spectrum of disease that can occur after an aspiration event.
To understand the pathophysiology involved in disease caused by aspiration.
To understand that it is outdated to administer antimicrobials for 4-6 weeks to treat cases of aspiration pneumonia.
To appreciate the benefit of monitoring disease trajectory, and the concept of a delayed antimicrobial prescription.
