Feelings of shame and being judged are common to both veterinary professionals and pet owners. These are normal emotions, but they can become toxic, resulting in harm to mental health and/or negative interactions with others. This session looks at what is known about shame, stigma and judgment in the medical professions, and how we can use that knowledge to support healthy working environments.

  • Define what shame, stigma and judgment mean in the veterinary profession
  • Discuss the effects these emotions can have on staff and clients
  • Evaluate approaches to reducing negative effects used in other professions
