Blood work screens are frequently performed for dogs and cats. Reasons include pre-anaesthetic assessment, "geriatric" assessment and prior to administration of some drugs such as NSAIDs. When such tests throw up an abnormality in what seems to be an otherwise well animal the clinical dilemma can be whether there should be a change in any planned procedures or treatments, whether further tests are required to gain further information or whether the result can be ignored. During this lecture we will discuss the various challenges that screening bloodwork can create including quality assurance factors that may cause abnormal results and interpretation of clinical pathology tests that have distinct "grey areas" such as liver enzymes.
