Live foaling rates in well managed Thoroughbred mares are typically reported around 80% which means that conversely 20% of all mated mares fail to produce. The knock on economic and/or personal impact of reproductive inefficiency on the client is undeniable.
Sub fertile mares can be very challenging, but when reproductive problems are diagnosed early and treated effectively the chances of producing an early successful pregnancy and viable foal with future athletic ability is greatly increased.
This lecture will discuss some of the challenging aspects of diagnosing and treating mare infertility from barren mare work ups and problem mare treatments to high risk pregnancy diagnosis and management.

  • Determine potential causes of subfertility in the barren mare
  • Outline a targeted treatment and management plan for future breeding and post-breeding treatment to optimize pregnancy outcome
  • Know how to ultrasound the fetus and the placenta throughout pregnancy
  • Understand what is appropriate & safe therapy in the high-risk pregnancy, weighing up the mare’s well-being, the foetal viability, chance of survival and the owners wishes/economics.
