All gastrointestinal tract surgery carries a risk of incisional breakdown leading to lifethreatening peritonitis which has a mortality rate of 50-80%. It is imperative that everything possible is done at the first surgery to maximize the potential for healing of the gastrointestinal wound. The objective of this lecture is to provide tips and recommendations on the factors you can control as well as discuss the decision making involved in performing successful GI surgery

  • Recognise the critical stages of GI wound healing
  • Have learnt practical tips for optimising the outcome of enterectomy surgery
  • Recognise the early stages of post-operative septic peritonitis
