This session will consider the consequences of current use of confinement in animal agriculture, with specific emphasis on the pig and poultry sectors. The complex ethical and welfare issues around the use of both these and available alternative systems, along with other associated 'One Health One Welfare' elements, will be explored with the audience invited to join the debate.
Learning Outcomes
Investigate lessons from current systems, with a focus on the one-health and one-welfare approach.
To understand what confinement is currently used in commercial pig systems and the reasons behind this
To understand what alternatives are available are the potential advantages and disadvantages to their implementation
Increasing understanding of latest knowledge of key welfare challenges faced by animals in close confinement systems
Gaining further understanding of welfare assessment approaches and their limitations
Consider how disease control and production efficiencies can impact on welfare outcomes
