FearLess at the vets: Because patient emotional wellbeing matters

This presentation aims to look at simple, yet effective steps practices can take both within the consultation space and process, and the period prior to the consultation, to reduce stress in our canine patients.
Science has shown a significant proportion of dogs are fearful at the vets, often from the moment they arrive outside the clinic.  Taking a number of easy steps to improve our dog patient’s emotional wellbeing, may not only help us provide an enhanced service to that dog but can also negate some handling and situational responses developing outside their time at the practice. Perceptions of negative interactions with people within the clinic can affect reactions to procedures such as grooming, being approached by unfamiliar people on walks, and even impact the relationship they have with the humans they live day to day with. Small changes can make a big difference, benefiting the animal, their caregivers and the practice itself.

Learning Outcomes
*Recognising the vet consultation room as a potential stressor for dogs and clients *Scoring stress within an individual patient *Practical approach to reducing stress before clinic arrival *Tools to keep stress low during consultation handling and procedures
