This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of canine glaucoma, a neurodegenerative ocular disease characterised by increased intraocular pressure (IOP), optic nerve damage, and progressive vision loss. It covers the pathophysiology of glaucoma, factors affecting IOP, and diagnostic techniques including tonometry and gonioscopy. Detailed clinical signs for both acute and chronic glaucoma are described, along with differential diagnoses. The presentation explores medical and surgical treatment options, focusing on pharmacological agents and when to consider referral to a specialist.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Define glaucoma and understand its pathophysiological impact on the canine eye.
  • Identify clinical signs of both acute and chronic glaucoma in dogs.
  • Diagnose glaucoma based on clinical appearance and diagnostic tests and differentiate it from other ocular conditions with similar presentations.
  • Evaluate treatment options, understanding the mechanisms, indications, and side effects of commonly used medications.
  • Understand indications for surgical intervention and when referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist is warranted.
  • Appreciate the importance of early diagnosis and management in preserving vision and reducing pain in affected dogs.
