This lecture will provide a diagnostic framework for the investigation of the pale patient. Once anaemia has been confirmed as the cause of pallor, the logical diagnostic approach rests on determining whether the anaemia is regenerative or non-regenerative. Focus will be placed on interpretation of haematology results including reticulocyte counts and dot plots. A guide on the interpretation of blood smears will provide the delegate with the confidence to achieve a more rapid diagnosis in practice. Differential diagnoses and additional diagnostics for both regenerative and non-regenerative anaemias will be discussed.
- Understand how to approach the anaemic patient in a logical manner
- Understand how to interpret your in-house haematology and blood film examinations
- Understand how to differentiate between regenerative and non-regenerative anaemia
