Ferrets are popular pets and are regularly seen in small animal practice. In general, the approach to a sick ferret is similar to that of other small carnivores with a few key species-specific differences. Preventative medicine however can be more challenging, with conflicting evidence and controversy regarding the most appropriate vaccination protocol, contraceptive method or even diet to recommend. Advice may vary significantly according to the individual and their lifestyle. This session will include the risks and benefits of vaccinating a pet ferret to help guide recommendations for the individual. The different options for hormone treatment or surgical neutering will also be discussed including the pros and cons of each approach.
