It is estimated that chronic valvular heart disease is the most common heart disease in dogs in most parts of the world. It is therefore likely that many of the patients you have registered suffer from this degenerative disease. Having a full understanding of the disease process helps the nurse explain the condition to the clients as well as supporting the patient through the phases of the disease. Medical management has always been the only treatment option but now there are surgical solutions that may be suitable for some patients. This lecture will discuss the terminology used with staging canine mitral valve disease, the current medical treatment options and how as a nurse this guides the care for your patient, and some surgical interventions that are now a real possibility.
