Jaundice can be caused by a wide range of different pathologies. One of the key clinical decisions that often needs to be made is whether the cause requires medical or surgical management. In this lecture we will review a logical approach to the assessment of the jaundiced patient, consider what clinical path can and cannot tell us about the aetiology, review the role of diagnostic imaging in helping locate the lesion and provide an overview of medical and surgical solutions to different pathologies.
