How many times have we all said the animals aren't the problem its the owners. In this lecture we will look at to manage the welfare of our patients when the challenges and problems are created by the client, whether that be client mental health, beliefs around euthanasia, lack of capacity or the inability to physically control their dog. Using real life case examples we will consider the options and suggest practical real world solutions that protect the welfare of the pet and support your client whilst also ensuring you don't compromise your professional integrity in the process.

  • Recognize common client-related factors (e.g., mental health challenges, beliefs around euthanasia, physical limitations) that can negatively impact animal welfare.
  • Evaluate how these client challenges may create ethical and professional dilemmas in veterinary practice.
  • Apply practical strategies for managing animal welfare in cases where client-related issues are the primary barrier.
  • Develop approaches to support clients compassionately while safeguarding professional integrity and legal responsibilities.
  • Reflect on real-world case examples to identify best practices that balance animal welfare, client wellbeing, and professional standards.
