Trauma accounts for 10% of the emergency admissions in veterinary medicine and some of them may require advanced diagnostics and treatment. This patients are usually unstable and will require some degree of intervention before they can be anaesthestised.
In this lecture we will revise lightly the pathophysiology of trauma (physical disruption, local and systemic biochemical responses, and coagulation) and the stabilization. After that we will focus on the anaesthetic management of the three main traumas: thoracic, abdominal and head trauma and will discuss anaesthetic protocols, complications and postoperative care.
