Mitigating the environmental impact of volatile anaesthetic gases

The volatile anaesthetic agents isoflurane and sevoflurane are commonly used for the maintenance of general anaesthesia in veterinary practice. However, their use has a significant deleterious impact on the environment, by contributing to global warming. This session investigates the scale of the carbon footprint of inhaled anaesthetic agents and how we can meaningfully contribute to its reduction, whilst maintaining safe and effective anaesthetic procedures. Low flow anaesthesia and other approaches will be discussed.
