| Presented by: Mark Acierno (Professor / Associate Dean, Midwestern University) Session Description: The diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in veterinary medicine are evolving rapidly, with new terminology, guidelines, and diagnostic technologies reshaping our clinical approach. This session will help clinicians distinguish between subclinical bacteriuria and true UTIs, explore appropriate indications for culture and treatment, and understand best practices for managing sporadic and recurrent infections. Special considerations for cats, intact male dogs, and the use of alternative therapies such as cranberry, methenamine, and probiotics will also be discussed. Attendees will leave with a practical, evidence-based framework for antimicrobial stewardship and UTI case management. - •Distinguish between bacteriuria, subclinical bacteriuria, and urinary tract infection (UTI) •Apply evidence-based antimicrobial stewardship principles to UTI management •Select appropriate empirical treatments for sporadic UTIs based on current guidelines •Develop diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for managing recurrent UTIs •Recognize and manage UTIs involving the prostate in intact male dogs •Interpret and implement culture and sensitivity results for targeted therapy |
