This bite-size session will cover the key steps in performing bone marrow biopsies in dogs.
- Clinical Indications: When marrow sampling is appropriate, including cytopenias and suspected neoplasia.
- Patient Preparation: Sedation, analgesia, and aseptic technique.
- Sampling Sites: Preferred locations such as the iliac crest, humerus, and femur.
- Techniques: Overview of aspiration and core biopsy methods.
- Slide Preparation: Smear and core sample handling for diagnostic interpretation.
Attendees will gain practical insights to perform marrow biopsies confidently and effectively in primary care practice settings.
- 1. Understand the clinical indications for bone marrow sampling in dogs, including common haematological and systemic conditions requiring evaluation.
- 2. Gain confidence in selecting appropriate sampling sites and performing bone marrow aspiration and biopsy techniques safely and effectively.
- 3. Learn techniques for preparing and submitting bone marrow samples for diagnostic interpretation, including smear preparation and fixation.
