The 2 words that strike fear into all nurses are emergency and exotics, but why?We have the skills and the knowledge within us to be able to keep a level head and to deal with any situation that is thrown at us.The presentation of a non traditional companion animal is either exciting, or exiting, making you want to run away and hide in the staff room until it has left the building.I aim to give you some of the skills to be able to safely and effectively deal with a patient that is presented to practice requiring care as an emergency. With a few tweaks to your knowledge, your skills and your experience, the treatment from initial phone call, triage, assisting, hospitalising and ultimately discharging one of these patients will feel as natural as working with a cat or dog.
