Cattle and sheep farm assurance schemes allow farmers to demonstrate that the food they have produced has met specific, independently certified standards. Assurance schemes are no longer considered a simple tick box exercise. The evolving standards in the various UK schemes recognise the role of the farm vet in generating objective data to demonstrate high standards of animal health and welfare. Assurance schemes offer vets a unique opportunity to upskill farmers through education, training and support alongside being a communicator to better inform consumers eg BVA #ChooseAssured. EU Exit, climate change, sustainable farming schemes, AMR are a few of the challenges facing the industry. Examples will be given of stewardship programmes where vets are collaborating with assurance scheme providers and other stakeholders to tackle these challenges using an objective, outcome focused approach.
