Anaesthetising patients with suspected increased intracranial pressure (ICP) presents unique and potentially life-threatening challenges. This session will guide veterinary nurses through safe anaesthetic planning, drug choices, and vital monitoring techniques and strategies to protect the brain. With a focus on EtCO₂, blood pressure, and early recognition of cushing's reflex, nurses will gain practical tools to improve outcomes in high-risk neurological patients—from stabilisation through to smooth recovery.

  • Understand the brain physiology and the Monro-Kellie doctrine concept
  • Select appropriate anaesthetic protocols and adapt strategies to minimise further increases in ICP while supporting cerebral perfusion and autoregulation.
  • Monitor and manage key physiological parameters
  • Recognise and respond to signs indicating brain herniation during anaesthesia and/or recovery.
