This lecture explores recent developments in managing canine and feline diabetes mellitus particularly focusing on the positives and negatives around the use of SGLT-2 inhibitors for managing feline diabetes mellitus, use of insulin, Toujeo, for both dog and cat diabetics along with some thoughts around the “dos and don’ts” of interstitial glucose monitoring and what we might do to try and reduce the likelihood of cataract formation.

Learning Outcomes
An understanding of the way an SGLT-2 inhibitor works to potentially improve diabetic control. What you need to watch out for when using SGLT-2 inhibitors in primary care practice. An understanding of the issues around diabetic cataracts and how different emphasis on management may help to reduce their severity and rate of development. Situations where use of insulin, Toujeo, might be considered as a viable or preferable alternative to standard, registered delayed onset insulins. Understanding the differences between interstitial and blood glucose measurements and what these differences mean for our management of diabetics.
