Management of patients with respiratory disease and or respiratory compromise is challenging and requires tailoring of the anaesthetic plan. This lecture aims to outline the basic physiological principles which should be considered in patients with respiratory compromise, reflect on how disease and administration of sedation and or anaesthesia may alter the physiology and how best to support, monitor and tailor your anaesthetic plan to reduce the risk of severe complications.
Providing mechanical ventilation to patients with respiratory disease is often required, however, is it possible to provide this in a safe manner? We will discuss the approach to ventilating a compromised patient considering mode of ventilation and monitoring.
