Treating companion animals that have cancer is becoming a more common request as our client expectations widen. Surgical and non-surgical alternatives, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are available within many UK veterinary referral centres and our clients are aware of these options. So what is our role? Veterinary nurses need to understand the goals of medical oncology, what we are aiming to achieve from the onset when looking after patients with terminal disease and their families. We need to appreciate how these patients and clients may differ from other cases in the clinic and how we can very easily apply our transferable, core nursing skills to provide chemotherapy to patients in general practice and really make a difference.
