Monitoring a diabetic dog or cat is a crucial part of diabetes management. Unfortunately, expert recommendations for the optimal monitoring protocol vary to the point of frustration for many veterinarians. Tests, such as the glucose curve, hemoglobin A1c, or fructosamine, are frequently used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment of dogs and cats receiving insulin to control hyperglycemia. The physiologic basis for each test, as well as the expected effects of diabetes on test results will be reviewed. The pros and cons of various tests used for monitoring glycemia well be explored and recommendations made for developing a useful strategy for management of patients with chronic diabetes. The rationale and practicality of monitoring to achieve defined metabolic goals will be part of the broader discussion as these strategies are integrated into clinical practice.
