Owners have a tendency to book their pet in for a neutering procedure and assume they do not need to discuss this with you, the vet, because it is a routine surgery. However, at some stage prior to surgery a veterinary discussion needs to occur to enable them to give informed consent. Ovariohysterectomy is considered a ‘day one’ skill for veterinary graduates yet it is a relatively complex surgical procedure that has the same complications as other abdominal procedures. Recent availability and owner demand has led to expansion of laparoscopic neutering in UK practice, which is usually performed as an ovariectomy procedure. The evidence for performing ovariectomy versus ovariohysterectomy will be considered in detail alongside other neutering dilemmas.
