Does the old adage chance to cut is a chance to cure hold true for respiratory disease? There is no simple answer to that question! Respiratory disease can be present anywhere between the nasal ostia and the alveoli, we know that surgery has the potential to improve airflow, remove compromised tissue or stabilise the diaphragm or chest wall. The ability to carry out any surgery will depend on pre operative stabilisation, individual experience and competence of the surgeon, and most importantly in my opinion, the ability to manage the patient post-operatively. That ranges from providing appropriate nursing care and dealing with any potential complications that may arise following airway surgery. Upper airway surgery in particular is unforgiving with the margin for error being small. This lecture will look at common conditions such as BOAS and ruptured diaphragm, it will focus on surgical techniques, how to minimise complications and how to manage them post surgery.
