In small animal practice, dogs are the most likely species to experience foreign body trauma. Objects can be lodged within the oral cavity, nasal cavity, pharynx or penetrate anywhere. Sticks may break off with a section remaining in the tissues and can migrate to cause issues at distant sites over time. Stick penetrations tend to present to the veterinarian in two separate and quite clinically distinct categories: acute and chronic, the latter often with a characteristic draining tract. We will work through differential diagnoses and discuss how recent improvements in imaging technologies have revolutionized our ability to locate both recent impalements and migrating foreign bodies.
