Veterinary orthoses and prosthetics first originated in human health care and are now widely respected within the veterinary industry. An orthotic is an externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system.

This presentation will highlight the evidence for the use of an orthotic for different orthopaedic and neurological conditions and will cover the following key points:
    •    The principles of an orthosis in order to aid your decision making for recommendation of or referral for an orthotic.
    •    Indications for the use of an orthosis.
    •    An insight into the different levels of orthotic support available.
    •    The distinction between prefabricated off the shelf products and bespoke orthotics.
    •    Recognising candidates for an orthotic through case examples.
