Owners and veterinary teams are bombarded with misinformation about pet foods. Nutrition is an emotional topic for some owners. Owners may make decisions about what to feed their pet based on their “gut feelings” or on misinformation from websites. The veterinary health care team should understand how owners make these decisions and be able to provide scientific information about nutritional myths and how to make good feeding choices. This lecture will enable the health care team to discuss some areas of petfood misinformation and misunderstanding, including unregulated label terms, homemade and raw foods, feeding bones, and pet food ingredients.
