Melanoma is a common malignancy in veterinary patients that arises from pigment-producing melanocytes. This cancer has a wide variety of clinical presentations and variable biologic behavior, depending upon tumor location and patient species. Therapeutic options including surgery, radiation therapy, and drug therapy (chemotherapy and immunotherapy) are available for the treatment of melanoma, with combinatorial therapy typically achieving the best long-term outcomes. This presentation will detail how to recognize the various clinical presentations of melanoma; appropriate diagnostic and staging techniques to confirm a diagnosis of melanoma and assess the extent of disease spread within the body; formulation and implementation of an appropriate treatment plan for patients with melanoma; and determining prognosis for informed clinical decision-making.
