CIRCI, or Critical Illness-Related Corticosteroid Insufficiency is a syndrome that has been identified in the literature in humans, dogs, and cats, describing either low cortisol levels or a decreased adrenal response in patients who are critically ill. The hypotension associated with this syndrome can lead to increased morbidity, organ failure, and death. This seminar will discuss the evidence for this syndrome, how to recognize CIRCI in the critically ill dog or cat, and therapy to help target the undesirable effects on patients.
