The diagnosis of feline hyperthyroidism is straight-forward in many cats. However, the diagnosis can be less clear in early hyperthyroidism or in cats with non-thyroidal disorders. Monitoring thyroid therapy can also be confusing in certain patients. This lecture will emphasize the use of specific thyroid tests (total T4, fT4 and eTSH) to best determine thyroid status and provide therapeutic monitoring in feline hyperthyroidism.
- Upon completion, participants will identify the common clinical signs associated with feline hyperthyroidism.
- Upon completion, participants will identify the common laboratory findings associated with feline hyperthyroidism.
- Upon completion, participants will understand how thyroid tests can correctly identify hyperthyroid cats from cats with other non-thyroidal illness.
- Upon completion, participants will understand the use of total T4 (thyroxine) evaluation in feline hyperthyroidism.
- Upon completion, participants will understand the use of free T4 evaluation in feline hyperthyroidism.
- Upon completion, participants will understand the use of endogenous TSH evaluation in feline hyperthyroidism.
