If one factor has led to the improvement in treatment of this potentially devastating disease, it has been the growth in our understanding of the ongoing detrimental processes in affected animals. This has resulted in far more effective perioperative patient management and led to the development of highly successful treatment protocols. This presentation will the identification and stabilisation of dogs with acute gastric dilation and volvulus and the surgical approach to restoration of normal gastric position, once the patient is stable. The key features of appropriate post operative care will also be described.
