Atopic dermatitis is a lifelong disease that requires ongoing management to maintain remission and prevent flares. It is a complex condition that involves a poor skin barrier, abnormal skin inflammation, allergies (in most but not all dogs) to environmental, food and/or Malassezia allergens, and secondary skin and ear infections. Treatment is in two phases. Firstly, induction to achieve remission. This will involve rapid acting anti-itch, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial treatment. Once in remission long term maintenance will be required. It is essential that the mode of action, spectrum of activity, speed of onset, and short and long term safety are understood. This allows you to work with your clients to find a programme of treatment to keep their dog comfortable.
