The appropriate management of patients with mitral valve disease relies on several factors. The disease must first be diagnosed and appropriately staged. Evidence for the effectiveness of therapy varies between different stages of the disease. In the earliest stage of the disease, no therapy is known to be effective or thought necessary. After cardiac enlargement has occurred, but before the onset of heart failure, pimobendan therapy is effective at prolonging the time to the onset of clinical signs. After the development of heart failure, several treatments are believed to be effective. Mitral valve repair surgery is also becoming a viable management option in some cases. This presentation will briefly outline the diagnosis and staging of mitral valve disease before going on to consider medical and surgical management options.
