Whilst management fads come and go, the concept of leadership has stood the test of time since Biblical times. This is because our need for leadership is psychologically rooted in our human discomfort with 'uncertainty'. I therefore define leadership as "the ability to navigate others through uncertainty". Human beings create a range of belief-systems, rituals and habits to do this in our attempts to make sense of, and cope with uncertainty - these range from organised religion at a societal level to quirky individual superstitious rituals.

The notion of and the need for navigating others through uncertainty is as relevant to veterinary practice as it is to life in general. Therefore this talk will look at leadership using a multi-dimensional approach using my CSI model of analysis where CSI refers to the need to recognise, understand and impact 'Culture-Systems-Individuals' as key tools of leadership.

    • The relationship between leadership and uncertainty
    • Defining culture
    • Recognising archetypal cultures within veterinary practice
    • Defining systems
    • Essential systems within veterinary practice
    • Recognising and addressing our individual 'leadership-limiting beliefs'
