Feline hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrinopathy seen in cats, presenting typically in older cats, and often made more challenging by the presence of concurrent conditions. It is essential for nurses to possess a thorough understanding of the condition and feel confident in discussing all elements of the disease and its many treatment options with owners. This presentation will explore the development of the disease, the presenting clinical signs and various complications that may arise. Available diagnostic modalities will be considered including the benefits of scintigraphy and the presence of ectopic hyperfunctional thyroid tissue. Treatment options including medical management, dietary management, surgery, and radio-active iodine treatment will be thoroughly explored and both their advantages and limitations deliberated.
