Acute severe respiratory distress is an uncommon presentation, but one can develop into a life-threatening situation without appropriate intervention. Obstruction of the upper airway often results in characteristic symptoms that allow differentiation from lower airway disease without the need for costly and time-consuming additional diagnostics. In this talk we will look at the symptoms and causes of upper airway obstruction and what to do when presented with a horse in severe respiratory distress. We will discuss when further diagnostics are required and what tests are most appropriate.
