In this VECCS/EVECCS international ECC session we will discuss the first steps when approaching patients with acute abdomen; assessing a patient and understanding the severity of the disease is of paramount importance. An initial focused triage needs to be followed by a comprehensive physical examination as acute abdomen can be caused by different conditions. Initial diagnostics should be targeted at trying to identify life threatening conditions to stabilise initially but also to identify those that require specific treatment and for which the wrong treatment choice could be detrimental.
