Following the ‘Health and Harmony’ consultation in 2018, government set out its intention to work with industry to reduce endemic disease and improve health conditions on farm. On 1 January 2021 the agricultural transition period started and includes opportunities to support farmers to improve their productivity alongside health & welfare, improve the environment and reduce carbon emissions. This has involved the co-design of a programme that aspires to enable co-ordinated delivery of a progressive ‘Animal health and welfare pathway’ for all animal keepers in England across whole sectors, enabling the industry to become more productive, resilient and independent in partnership with government. From the perspective of industry, a range of positive outcomes are expected, including better welfare, improved health, less waste, enhanced productivity alongside international competitiveness, with the obvious improvement of our environment and international reputation and increased trade; becoming the “go to” country for breeding stock and for output that is consistently of a high standard. Vets and the working partnership between vets in practice and farmers sits front and center in this Pathway approach.
