This presentation will consider some of the reasons why approaches to behavioural issues can sometimes be unsuccessful and responses to behavioural modification techniques can fall short of expectations. It will consider the use of the health triad concept when approaching behavioural cases and explore some of the potential pitfalls when parts of the triad are overlooked or underestimated. Behavioural presentations are common in the general practice context but dealing with them can be challenging. Through discussion of the effect of some of the common pitfalls this presentation will seek to offer veterinary practices some practical ways in which they can offer a worthwhile and effective behavioural medicine service.

    • Understand the importance of considering physical health factors when dealing with behavioural change
    • Appreciate the need to consider emotion and cognition when investigating behavioural cases
    • Consider the role of cognition in development and maintenance of problematic behaviours
    • Consider the impact of emotional arousal as well as valence on response to behavioural modification
