Obesity is one of the most pressing concerns in companion animal welfare, affecting a wide range of domestic species. Working with owners in their home environments to implement required management techniques can be challenging. In this talk, we will explore the research and interventions made in the fields of child, dog, and equine obesity, in order to provide insight into the reasons for obesity prevalence, and options to bring about change. The COM-B model of behaviour will be used to consider owners’/parents’ capability, opportunity and motivation to change in relation to obesity, and the interventions that have been trialled for each species.

    • An understanding of the contributors to behaviour change, utilising the COM-B model of change
    • An understanding of the contributors to obesity prevalence in children, dogs and horses
    • An understanding of some of the interventions applied to human, dog and equine obesity
    • Applied knowledge around how behaviour change interventions might affect behaviour
