This session will review key components of recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), basic life support (BLS), advanced life support (ALS), and post-resuscitation care. Recognition of CPA involves rapid identification of a patient that is non-responsive and apneic, while calling for help. In 2 rescuer CPR the first rescuer starts chest compressions, while the second rescuer clears the airway while intubating, secures the endotracheal tube and commences ventilation. Recommended technique for chest compressions and ventilation will be discussed. ALS starts with monitoring, IV access, and administration of reversal agents before a rhythm check dictates the next step based on the presence of a shockable vs. non-shockable rhythm. If CPR is successful respiratory and hemodynamic optimization is required in the post-arrest period to maximise the likelihood of patient survival.

At the end of this lecture attendees will be able to:

Understand the rationale and basic physiology of CPR

Describe the recommended components of CPR according to the RECOVER guidelines, including recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), basic life support (BLS), and advanced life support (ALS).

Recall the basic components of post-arrest care

Speakers:

Claire Sharp, BSc BVMS MS DACVECC, Associate Professor - Murdoch University

Corrin Boyd, BSc BVMS(Hons) GradDipEd MVetClinStud PhD MANZCVS DACVECC, Senior Lecturer - Murdoch University

Sponsored by:
