A novel hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) has recently been developed, derived from purified expired blood units and designed to provide a universal, room-temperature stable alternative to traditional transfusion products. This presentation will review ongoing efforts to evaluate the feasibility and tolerability of administering this HBOC in dogs with anemia. The results of these efforts will be used to inform the design of future trials aimed at evaluating clinical efficacy and potential adverse event profile, such as nephrotoxicity.
