Common examples include NSAIDs (for both species), lilies (for cats), and grapes (for dogs). In addition to gastrointestinal decontamination, most veterinary textbooks and review articles recommend admission to hospital for administration of intravenous fluid therapy at greater than calculated maintenance requirements (usually two to three times) for several days (usually 48-72 hours). The stated rationale is that this will induce a diuresis, which results in more rapid renal excretion of the toxin and/or prevention of processes causing acute kidney injury (AKI) in the response to the toxin. This assertion is not supported by clinical evidence and does not have a strong physiologic rationale. Undoubtedly, clinical pathology tests are a very important part of the diagnostic tools veterinary practitioners need to diagnose and manage complex diseases in small animal patients. As more tests become available, it is imperative that the practitioner is aware of what test results can mean and how to apply them appropriately to cases. Abnormal or even normal results in an unwell patient can create confusion rather than clarity if they are not critically reviewed as an integral part of the clinical assessment of all data relevant to the patient and related to the presenting problem(s). During this lecture, we will discuss the clinical and non-clinical factors that the clinician must consider when choosing tests and interpreting test results.

Appreciation of the importance of a rational assessment of the history and clinical examination findings before initiating diagnostic testing

Appreciation of what test results can mean - when is a positive a true positive? But if a patient is found to be azotaemic, does that mean it must have renal failure? Urine specific gravity is less frequently measured despite being easy and cheap to do so. Yet it is usually impossible to fully assess an azotaemic patient without knowing the urine SG. Interpretation of urine specific gravity (SG) and serum urea and creatinine requires understanding renal physiology (which we all hated learning about at university!) and the mechanisms that control these parameters. In this lecture, we will review the key aspects of renal function in an accessible way to help us understand why a patient with low urine SG and azotaemia does not always have renal failure and to recognise other disorders that impair both urine concentration and cause azotaemia.

To understand the factors, both renal and non-renal, that cause azotaemia and impaired urine concentration

To appreciate that not every patient with azotaemia has renal failure - even if urine concentrating ability is impaired

Speakers:

Jill Maddison, BVSc DipVetClinStud PhD FACVSc SFHEA MRCVS, Professor of General Practice - Royal Veterinary College

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0102/9989/9959/files/19_07425a31-9bba-4a12-a820-2d1fca9920c8.png?v=1769688717
don-t-blink-handling-ocular-emergencies-with-confidence-svs25
Don’t Blink: Handling Ocular Emergencies with Confidence (SVS25)

25 Oct 2025 | 15:45 - 16:35 | RVC Clinical Theatre 1

Eye emergencies can be intimidating, but quick recognition and the right first steps make all the difference. Despite their popularity, the husbandry and diet of exotic pets are often still inadequate. These nutritional and husbandry inadequacies may not be immediately apparent, as the presenting signs are often non-specific, e.g. lethargy and inappetence, and a full history is an important part of an exotic pet consult to identify the primary cause of any illness. Identifying non-surgical causes is critical for avoiding an unnecessary and potentially detrimental exploratory laparotomy, and careful pre-operative resuscitation is key for anaesthetic safety and surgical success. Some surgical causes e.g. a ruptured spleen are much more straightforward to manage than others e.g. a ruptured liver or adrenal mass so imaging and pre-operative planning is important. Practical tips for stabilisation and surgical management of haemoabdomen will be shared. Success of surgically managed haemoabdomen is also dictated by optimal peri-operative anaesthesia, analgesia and critical care so careful attention needs to paid to these aspects. This session will review key components of recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), basic life support (BLS), advanced life support (ALS), and post-resuscitation care. Recognition of CPA involves rapid identification of a patient that is non-responsive and apneic, while calling for help. In 2 rescuer CPR the first rescuer starts chest compressions, while the second rescuer clears the airway while intubating, secures the endotracheal tube and commences ventilation. Recommended technique for chest compressions and ventilation will be discussed. ALS starts with monitoring, IV access, and administration of reversal agents before a rhythm check dictates the next step based on the presence of a shockable vs. non-shockable rhythm. If CPR is successful respiratory and hemodynamic optimization is required in the post-arrest period to maximise the likelihood of patient survival.

At the end of this lecture attendees will be able to:

Understand the rationale and basic physiology of CPR

Describe the recommended components of CPR according to the RECOVER guidelines, including recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), basic life support (BLS), and advanced life support (ALS).

Recall the basic components of post-arrest care

Speakers:

Claire Sharp, BSc BVMS MS DACVECC, Associate Professor - All drugs have the potential to result in an ADR. ADRs present a continuum of clinical significance, but of greatest concern are serious ADRs described as adverse drug reactions that are fatal, life threatening, disabling, incapacitating or which result in permanent or prolonged adverse clinical signs. There are different types of ADRs – some of which can be avoided if sufficient is known about the drug and patient – hence the importance of understanding basic pharmacological principles. Others, such as drug hypersensitivity reactions, may not be avoidable the first time they occur. This lecture will review how ADRs are classified, the factors that increase the risk of an ADR occurring in an individual patient and issues that impact on whether an ADR is reported to the manufacturer or government authority.

Practitioners can make a massive contribution to the ongoing appropriate use of veterinary medicines by recognising and reporting suspected adverse reactions. Important examples include the practitioner reported association of ivermectin use in dogs and adverse neurological effects and the use of high doses of enrofloxacin in cats leading to apparent blindness. Once the profession was alerted and additional cases reported, investigation was possible and resulted in the identification of genetic predispositions in certain dogs and all cats. This session will also examine the clinical presentation, prognosis, and therapeutic strategies for primary and metastatic lung tumours in canine patients. While the lung is a frequent site for metastasis, primary pulmonary neoplasms such as adenocarcinoma and histiocytic sarcoma - especially in predisposed breeds - are relatively rare and sometimes incidentally discovered. We'll review common signs, diagnostic workup, and staging approaches, as well as the prognostic factors influencing treatment choices.
