Stress in human CPR is known to occur due to lack of role clarity. Given it is documented that the likelihood of achieving return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in patients is impacted not only by the quality of the compressions delivered but also the speed in which CPR is initiated, we must consider how we can best prepare practice teams and patients to provide prompt CPR. This is of particular importance when we consider that in cases where cardiopulmonary arrest has occurred due to an acute, reversible cause such as anaesthesia, patients are significantly more likely to achieve ROSC.This session aims to explore ways to reduce the stress associated with CPR by providing attendees with tools to prepare the client, patient and practice. Preparedness begins at the admission appointment via early conversations with clients regarding CPR codes and DNR status. The challenges associated with this will be discussed with a view to improving and overcoming these, to ease potential emotional stress for both the client and veterinary professional. Assessment and preparation of the patient will be covered to ensure CPR can be initiated promptly. Finally, how the practice and team can be prepared will be covered by discussing the environment in which CPR is performed, team roles/communication and training of team members.
Presented at BVA Live 2026 in BVNA Nursing theatre on 12 June 2026, from 13:00 to 13:50.

Presented by Betsy Malamah-Thomas
As the profession faces increasing workforce pressures, rising client expectations, and growing demands for efficiency, veterinary nurses represent an underutilised resource with significant potential to improve patient care, enhance client experience, and contribute to business sustainability. With roughly 15% of canine cutaneous and subcutaneous masses beingmalignant, this is not a minor gap. It is a structural blind spot in everyday clinical care, and one that the profession has accepted because, until now, there has been no practical alternative.This lecture is not about needles, workflows or revenue. It is about mindset. We will sit with one uncomfortable question: in human medicine we screen apparently healthy women for breast cancer with mammography long before symptoms appear, so why, in veterinary medicine, do we still rely on palpation and a wait-and-see default to make decisions about masses we can already see and touch? Through clinical cases, peer-reviewed evidence and a frank look at the myths that keep us in wait-and-see, we will reframe lump assessment as a screening problem, not a diagnostic one. VISTA iQ enters the conversation as the new first step, not a replacement for cytology or histopathology,but the missing screen that sits before them. Powered by Heat Diffusion Imaging and AI, validated on 892 dogs (Tumor Specific Classification of Canine Cutaneous and Subcutaneous Tumours Using Heat Diffusion Imaging and Artificial Intelligence, in review), the scan is 40 seconds, non-invasive and delivers a clear,actionable cancer-risk category at the point of consult. Real cases, including masses that palpated, looked and behaved like lipomas but turned out to be malignant, will show what changes for the patient, the owner and the clinician when screening becomes the default. You will leave with a different way of seeing the lump on the table tomorrow morning.
Presented at BVA Live 2026 in Exhibitor Showcase on 12 June 2026, from 12:00 to 12:50.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0102/9989/9959/files/vetandownerandlabontable_392b61d1-f5fb-453f-b115-fe0f8ee335a5.png?v=1789748345
emergency-fluid-resuscitation-are-more-fluids-always-the-answer
Emergency fluid resuscitation – are more fluids always the answer?

Presented by Anneka Phillips
Intravenous fluid therapy in cases of hypovolaemic or distributive shock is lifesaving. It is recommended that all practice staff involved in euthanasia are fully trained and a planned, rehearsed and coordinated approach is taken.’While most of the profession are confident in their approach to euthanasia in more familiar species such as dogs and cats, we also have a legal, moral, and ethical responsibility to provide owners of exotics (Non-Traditional Companion Animals) with the same high level of care in these cases. In many situations it would not be appropriate to refer the animal for euthanasia and may indeed cause an extended period of suffering of the animal.As an exotics vet, I often get asked how to administer euthanasia in these species as many vets panic when asked to see less familiar species. These factors can make communication with owners of cats affected about the disease challenging.
During the early years that FGCS has been recognised as a distinct disease process a clear definition of the disease was not always adhered to, this lead to confusion between similar (and potentially linked) diseases, such as Juvenile Gingivitis and acute onset periodontitis. But there are concerns and risks and for some this may inhibit their desire to use these powerful techniques.During the past five years there has been a significant amount of research focused on improving safety in using these techniques, exploring new products (what even is liposomal bupivicaine?), and even answering the question “Should I mix lidocaine and bupivicaine in the same syringe?”.This lecture will review recently published literature with the hope of providing guidance on topics including choosing which techniques are safest, what to use & when, and what new developments might we see in the near future.
Presented at BVA Live 2026 in Clinical Theatre 2 on 11 June 2026, from 12:15 to 13:05.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0102/9989/9959/files/29_8350826e-61da-4dac-be64-9483ba26bd07.png?v=1789743126
leadership-lessons-every-new-leader-needs-to-hear
Leadership: Lessons every new leader needs to hear

Presented by Francesca Verney; Fiona Leathers; Lyndsay Hughes; Gwen Rees
Sponsor: Vet Records
Stepping into a leadership role can be exhilarating, challenging and sometimes lonely. Weakness, gait abnormalities and collapse often trigger an instinctive focus on the spine, yet a wide range of vascular, neuromuscular, endocrine, cardiovascular and episodic movement disorders can convincingly imitate myelopathy.This lecture focuses on recognising when a case does not quite fit the expected spinal pattern. Through case-based discussion, it will highlight practical examination strategies and interpretative cues that help clinicians identify inconsistencies between history, neurological findings and neuroanatomical localisation. Particular emphasis will be placed on assessing onset, progression, symmetry, pain, fatigability and episodic change, as well as recognising patterns that suggest systemic or peripheral disease rather than spinal pathology.Rather than providing a comprehensive disease review, this talk aims to sharpen clinical judgement and reduce cognitive bias toward a spinal diagnosis. Attendees will be encouraged to pause before committing to advanced spinal imaging and instead ask: “What else could this be?” The ultimate goal is to reduce missed diagnoses, avoid unnecessary investigations, and improve outcomes by identifying the zebras hiding among the horses.
Presented at BVA Live 2026 in Clinical Theatre 2 on 12 June 2026, from 13:30 to 14:20.

Presented by David Maggs
When an ulcer hasn't healed at the first recheck, there is a tendency to throw up our arms and become frustrated.
